Vote for me, Doctor Ammar Waraich, on Thursday 4th July.

I will stand up for the people of Edgbaston and stand up for those that need help the most.

I will be your independent voice in Parliament, standing up for our community with compassion and integrity.

Compassion. Integrity. Independence.

I am a dedicated Neurology doctor working within the NHS at the local Queen Elizabeth Hospital. With a solid foundation in both medicine and business management, I graduated from Imperial College London and furthered my expertise by earning a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University as a Fulbright Scholar. I am a Member of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, reflecting my commitment to medical excellence and education.

In addition to my medical practice, I have contributed significantly to the academic community. I have served as an honorary clinical lecturer at the University of Birmingham’s medical school, where I also obtained a PGCME qualification in higher education. My passion for teaching and mentorship is evident in my dedication to educating the next generation of medical professionals.

Beyond my professional life, I am an avid photographer, road cyclist and tennis enthusiast. I have previously played at the Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society. I have deep roots in the Edgbaston community, having lived on Rotton Park Road and attended Lordswood Boys School.

My blend of professional expertise, academic involvement and personal interests makes me a well-rounded and dedicated advocate for the community.

Political parties have ignored the public for far too long.

Political parties have ignored the public for far too long. They are all the same. The interests of the party, of big donors, and of the media are most important to them. The concerns of the local communities are not.

Labour have been a huge disappointment, with U-turns on any hopeful or just policies. Keir Starmer has broken all the promises he made when seeking leadership of the party. It is clear that they no longer stand for the common person and that they cannot be trusted. The Tories have made our country an international laughing stock and are in disarray.

It is time for a different approach. It is time to vote for an Independent.

I have no party or large donors to back me. I have the people of Edgbaston. As an independent, I will represent you and the issues that affect you the most. I will be your local voice, for the people of Edgbaston.

I will listen with humility, respond with compassion, and act with integrity.

I will not be parliament’s representative to you. I will be your representative to parliament.

Save Our NHS

I am a doctor with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Having worked through the COVID pandemic, I have never seen the NHS more crippled than it is today. Some of my patients have been waiting years for an appointment with me due to a broken and overloaded system. It is no exaggeration to say people are suffering and dying whilst waiting for care.

I Support

To match other EU economies, including on much needed scanners, beds, buildings, and other physical equipment. Mental health, including Child and Adolescent Mental Health, and dentistry need a particular focus.

Increased domestic training, recruitment, and retention of NHS doctors and nurses. Meet demands made by health workers and unions around pay and working conditions. Fully trained GPs should not be forced to be unemployed!
Listen to local providers to understand exactly what resources are needed. Avoid yet another costly politically motivated reform of the NHS.
Keep our NHS public and prevent vital NHS funds being lost to profiteering companies that do not provide value and limit the NHS’ capacity.

Rebuild and Invest in Our Communities

Everyone has the right to live, learn and thrive with dignity. I will defend this right, your right, in parliament. Birmingham council is bankrupt. Central government funding to our council has been cut by at least £1 billion. Our local services have been reduced to a shocking state. Social housing stock is inadequate. As a governor at two schools, I have also seen the huge strain that cuts have put on our precious schools and the education of our children.

I Support

To local services, including social care, refuse collection, and pest control. Save our libraries, and do not make them a target of “efficiency” savings. Do not close day care centres. Stop the cuts to policing and work for better police presence on our streets. Renewed funding to local government from Westminster and better management of these funds.
Crime on our streets needs to be curtailed. This ranges from car stripping and knife or gun crime, to fly tipping and reckless driving on our doorsteps. Fund youth centres to better engage our youth. Empathetically help those suffering from the addiction crisis.
Nobody should be homeless. Repair and improve the current social housing stock and stop the sale of social housing. All rented accommodation – social and private – must be safe, secure and affordable to all. I also propose a review of HMO policy and how it is affecting our communities.
Investment in our schools needs to be increased to 5% of GDP. Our teachers need to be valued and paid properly to remain in the profession. I will demand timely assessments for children and adults with additional needs, so that they can access education and participate in their communities. I support ending private outsourcing of public education, which does not deliver quality or value for money. The role of Ofsted should be reviewed, with less emphasis on the test and exam model of education in favour of a broad, enriched curriculum. I support investment in further education, to deliver high quality, lifelong and vocational training and to tackle limited social opportunities for young people.

Punishing parents for choosing independent schools is not the way to finance the state sector.

Including minorities, disabled people, immigrants, and refugees. Everybody should feel welcomed and valued in their community. Immigrants and refugees should not become scapegoats and should be offered opportunities to work, especially as we have short-staffed sectors such as HGV, fruit picking, and construction. I support scrapping failed, costly projects, like the Bibby Stockholm and the Rwanda scheme, implementing safe routes and faster processing of asylum seekers instead. Work capability assessments should be reformed to prioritise the wellbeing and dignity of anyone eligible over bureaucratic hurdles.

Reduce Economic Hardship

Britain is one of the most unequal economies amongst OECD nations, with inequality rapidly accelerating since the 2008 financial crisis. Wealth is increasingly being concentrated amongst the top with the poorest struggling to pay for the essentials. The cost of living crisis has hit the poorest the hardest and many of our working families have become dependent on foodbanks. 4.3 million children are growing up in poverty in the UK, with the West Midlands as one of the UK’s poverty risk hotspots. In parts of Edgbaston, the number of children living in poverty is almost three times the national average.

I Support

That has pushed much of our society deeper into poverty and hardship.

So that everyone earns enough to meet their daily needs.  An end to zero-hours contracts to make employment secure.

And drawing down student debt so that everyone who wants to can afford a university education.

To stop pushing families into poverty.
For all children at school, no matter what your background.

Of natural monopolies such as energy, water, and railways.  This will ensure affordable bills, management that are accountable, and services not run for profit.

Save Our Planet

The climate crisis is an existential threat to all of us and it is here now. The opportunity to avoid greater, irreversible harm is also now. There is an economic investment required to transition away from carbon, but the alternative is permanent environmental catastrophe and breakdown. Mainstream parties are carrying on with business as usual, focussing on their vested interests instead of the planet.

I Support

To put people and the planet first.
To achieve net and then absolute zero as soon as possible.
Via local authorities, to increase efficiency and reduce energy bills.
To improve services so they are clean, efficient and affordable.
Access to clean water is a basic human right. Privatised water companies should be accountable for sewage discharges and should pay to clean up our waterways, not pay dividends to their shareholders instead.

For drinks containers and other recyclable packaging, to reduce the litter on our streets and for greater sustainability.

Peace, Dignity, and Justice in Palestine

The war on Gaza and its people is a clear case of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes. It is one of the greatest crimes of our age and in recent history. The condemnation from the UN and most respected international bodies supports this. The preliminary judgments from the ICJ and the ICC testify to it. However, this is not a recent phenomenon – oppression against the Palestinian people has been ongoing for over 75 years. Our country has had a key role in creating these conditions – from the initial Balfour declaration, to its current blind political and military support for the genocide. I know that the majority of the British public will be appalled at our government’s and Labour’s limp opposition to Israeli atrocities and their support for these war crimes in our name.

The mainstream parties have been surprised that normal, everyday people are appalled by Israeli atrocities and that the people want to publicly demonstrate this. The political establishment wants to restrict our ability to organise and for us to stay silent in the face of such barbarity. By pursuing this line, they are harming the very democratic fabric of our society.

I Support

For all nations, to achieve justice and peace.

For all, not just for some.
Restricting of military supplies, and divestment from any state that violates international humanitarian law, including Israel.
For a Palestinian state and self-determination for the people of Palestine.
For the historic and current crimes committed against the Palestinian people through national and international bodies, including the rulings of the ICJ and ICC.
Along with the reconstruction of Gaza and Palestine.
Including the full right to free speech, free assembly, and protest.
